Presbyopia

Do you know someone in the family who has to pull out a pair of reading glasses every time they need to check a text message or a restaurant menu? While you may not have heard the specific term presbyopia before, we can almost guarantee you know someone experiencing it. It is one of the most common vision changes we see at Acuity Eyecare, and while it can be frustrating, it is a completely manageable part of life’s journey.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the natural process by which the lens inside the eye loses its ability to change shape and focus on items up close. When we are young, the crystalline lens is remarkably flexible and elastic. This elasticity allows the lens to change its curvature instantly, providing the "zoom" power required to focus on near tasks like reading a book or threading a needle.

However, throughout our lifetime, this lens gradually becomes firmer and loses its elastic quality. As this happens, the eye finds it harder and harder to generate enough focusing power to keep near objects clear. This change usually becomes noticeable in our mid-40s and is a progressive process that continues for a number of years.

It is important to realise that presbyopia is 100% natural and occurs to every one of us eventually. It is a refractive error, much like myopia (short-sightedness) or hyperopia (long-sightedness), and should be viewed as a sign of your wisdom rather than a cause for concern!

Symptoms to Look Out For

Because presbyopia develops gradually, you might not notice it overnight. Many patients at Acuity Eyecare first report:

  • A tendency to hold reading material at arm's length to make the letters clearer.

  • Blurred vision when reading at a normal distance.

  • Eye strain or headaches after performing close-up work

  • Needing brighter lighting to see small print clearly.

If you find yourself constantly adjusting the distance of your phone or book, a comprehensive eye exam is the best way to determine your current level of presbyopia.

Treatment Options at Acuity Eyecare

The primary goal of treating presbyopia is to restore your ability to see clearly up close without sacrificing your distance vision. Because this condition changes over time, our management plans are designed to be flexible. Most cases of presbyopia are easily corrected with a tailored pair of prescription glasses or advanced contact lens technology.

Spectacle Solutions for Presbyopia

For many patients at Acuity Eyecare, the first step in managing presbyopia involves selecting the right pair of glasses. While it is tempting to pick up a pair of "ready-made" magnifiers from a chemist, these generic options can lead to headaches and eye strain because they don't account for the unique prescription of each eye. Depending on your lifestyle and whether you already require distance correction, we typically recommend one of the following:

Contact Lens Solutions for Presbyopia

While spectacles offer simplicity, contact lenses provide a level of freedom that many of our patients appreciate. Modern lens technology has evolved significantly, allowing us to manage presbyopia without the need for glasses at all. At Acuity Eyecare, we specialise in three primary contact lens approaches:
