What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a persistent inflammation of the eyelid margins, resulting in uncomfortable symptoms like burning, itching, excessive watering, and foreign body sensation. It is a chronic condition that is often linked to other eye issues, such as dry eye disease.
This condition is typically classified into two main categories, often requiring different treatment strategies for resolution:
1. Posterior Blepharitis (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction - MGD)
This is the most common cause of eye irritation and dryness. The meibomian glands, located on the top and bottom eyelid margins, are responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film. When working correctly, this oil prevents tear evaporation, keeping the eyes lubricated. With meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), the glands become blocked or produce poor-quality, waxy oil, which cannot adequately protect the tear film. This dysfunction is a primary driver of evaporative dry eye disease, and effective treatment of blepharitis is key to restoring gland functionality.
2. Anterior Blepharitis
The eyelashes and surrounding areas are home to many types of healthy bacteria. However, sometimes these bacteria can multiply and accumulate on the lid margin, resembling "lid dandruff." If left untreated, this accumulation can cause irritation and, in some cases, lead to secondary infection. This form of blepharitis requires careful cleaning and management to eliminate the flakes and debris.
Diagnosis & Effective Blepharitis Treatment
Your optometrist is expertly trained to examine your eyelids, diagnose the specific cause of your blepharitis, and advise on the best treatment plan to get your meibomian glands back to full potential or clear your lid margins. The management of blepharitis is often multi-faceted and may include in-office treatments combined with an at-home regimen:
