Private Billing and Medicare

Understanding Our Medicare and Bulk Billing Policy

Optometry is one of the few allied health professions in Australia where certain eye care services are covered under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). This means that a portion of your consultation fee may be reimbursed to you by the Australian Government.

To ensure we continue to deliver the highest level of care, including extensive consultation time, a personalised service, and constant investment in the latest diagnostic technology (such as OCT scanning), Acuity Eyecare operates under a Private Billing model for eye examinations. Our commitment is to manage your eye health proactively, which requires the time and resources that a private billing structure supports.

Bulk Billing Eligibility at Acuity Eyecare

While we are unable to provide bulk billing for all patients, we are dedicated to supporting community members who hold concession cards. We will continue to bulk bill for standard, comprehensive eye exams for the following cardholders:

  • Australian Government-issued Health Care Card holders

  • Australian Government-issued Pension Card holders

  • Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) card holders

For all other patients, the eye examination will be privately billed. This transparent approach allows us to deliver exceptional service while maximising your eligible medicare benefits.

The Private Billing Process Explained

When you book a comprehensive eye exam with our optometrists, the service is privately billed. This means you pay the full consultation fee on the day of your appointment. This fee covers the cost of advanced diagnostic testing and the specialised clinical expertise you receive.

We make the claiming process simple so you can quickly receive your medicare benefits:

  • Step 1: Payment: You pay the full consultation fee at the front desk.

  • Step 2: Instant Claim: We immediately process your medicare information and submit your eligible rebate claim on your behalf using our clinic software.

  • Step 3: Reimbursement: The rebate from the Australian Government is typically deposited directly back into your nominated bank account within 24 hours.

The difference between the fee you pay and the rebate you receive is a small out-of-pocket gap fee. Our Private Billing system ensures clarity, and our team is always available to answer any questions about your claim or medicare information.

We strive to make paying for your privately billed consultation and subsequent eyewear as convenient as possible.
