Double Vision

Seeing two images, whether they appear side-by-side or stacked vertically, is a significant symptom that should never be ignored. Identifying double vision causes is a clinical priority, as a sudden change in alignment can sometimes be linked to broader cardiovascular or neurological health issues.

While some cases related to vascular events may self-resolve over several months, others require active intervention. For persistent issues, our optometrists at Acuity Eyecare can prescribe specialised prism glasses. These lenses work by shifting the light before it enters your eye, re-aligning the two images to restore clear, single vision.

Eye Strain

In our digital age, eye strain has become one of the most frequent vision concerns we treat. This discomfort often stems from a struggle between "accommodation" (how the eye focuses) and "vergence" (how the eyes work as a team). If these two systems are not perfectly synced, your visual system has to work overtime to compensate. This internal "over-workout" leads to tired, fatigued, and sore eyes, often causing people to avoid reading or using screens. We can perform a detailed Binocular Vision Workup to alleviate this fatigue through tailored lenses or vision therapy.

Flashes and Floater

Noticing tiny black spots, squiggles, or sudden "lightning bolts" in your field of vision can be alarming. These are often caused by changes in the vitreous, the jelly-like substance inside the eye. As we age, this jelly can pull away from the retina, creating shadows (floaters) or electrical signals (flashes). While often a natural part of aging, any new or sudden increase in these symptoms needs an urgent assessment at Acuity Eyecare to rule out a retinal tear or detachment.

Foreign Body Injury

Accidents happen, and an injury involving a foreign body in the eye can be particularly painful. Whether it is a small metal fragment from grinding or garden debris, these particles can cause anything from minor redness to extreme pain and blurry vision. We cannot recommend strongly enough the importance of wearing safety glasses when working with power tools or in the garden.

Sore Eyes and Conjunctivitis

Having sore eyes is a broad symptom that can point to anything from simple lack of sleep to significant ocular inflammation. A very common culprit behind red and sore eyes is conjunctivitis. This involves inflammation of the thin, clear membrane covering the white of your eye. Because conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or environmental allergens, a professional diagnosis is essential to ensure you receive the correct treatment plan.

Ecchymosis (Sub-conjunctival Haemorrhage)

An ecchymosis is essentially a bruise on the eye. It occurs when a tiny blood vessel ruptures under the surface, often from something as minor as a sneeze or a cough. While it looks dramatic due to the bright red blood trapped under the clear membrane, it is usually harmless. However, we always recommend a quick check-up to ensure the underlying structures of the eye remain healthy.

Keratitis

This is the inflammation of the cornea, the "clear window" at the front of your eye. Because the cornea is packed with sensitive nerves, keratitis can cause intense discomfort, watery discharge, and blurred vision. While more common in contact lens wearers who may have over-worn their lenses, it requires prompt clinical attention to protect the clarity of your corneal surface.

Styes and Chalazions

A stye is a painful, red lump on the eyelid margin that often resembles a pimple. It is usually an infection of a blocked gland. While most styes resolve with warm compresses, they can sometimes leave behind a firm, non-tender lump known as a chalazion. If these do not clear up on their own, our team can advise on the next steps for management or referral for surgical removal.
