Glaucoma

This silent disease is known as the 'sneak thief of sight' because it causes permanent vision loss without warning. Our optometrists use advanced technology to detect glaucoma early and ensure timely and effective management - are you ready to protect your vision?

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the connection between the eye and the brain. This damage typically results from increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), which gradually causes the nerve tissue to atrophy (or die). In its late stages, this can result in a loss of peripheral vision.

While high intraocular pressure is a major risk factor, the exact mechanism of nerve death is unknown. In some cases, glaucoma can exist even when eye pressure is within a normal range (normal tension glaucoma). Conversely, a sudden closing of the drainage channels that control eye fluid can result in a rapid and severe form of the disease called acute angle closure glaucoma.

The key takeaway is that conditions like glaucoma can have no symptoms whatsoever until the disease has well and truly progressed. This highlights why a basic eye test is not enough; an Acuity Eyecare comprehensive eye exam, which includes our advanced clinical assessment methods and equipment, is essential to detect and diagnose early forms of this disease, to manage the risk of vision loss.

Early Glaucoma Detection Methods

Due to modern technology and improved clinical understanding, glaucoma can be well controlled in most cases when diagnosed early enough. At Acuity Eyecare, our comprehensive eye exams are specifically designed to detect and monitor glaucoma through three key methods:

Treatment &
Co-Management

Because the treatment for all types of glaucoma involves lowering eye pressure, our optometrists can manage the condition effectively once detected. This typically involves ongoing monitoring and management with therapies such as prescription eye drops. In cases requiring advanced intervention (such as laser therapy or filtration surgery), our team will co-manage your care with a trusted ophthalmologist, ensuring you receive seamless and appropriate treatment for your glaucoma.
