Sunglasses

Did you know that your eyes are up to 10 times more sensitive to UV rays than your skin? Living in Australia, we are exposed to some of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world, making sunglasses much more than a fashion accessory. At Acuity Eyecare, recommending the most appropriate sunglass protection for your eyes is a key part of our holistic eye care service.

Why Quality UV Protection Matters

Like with everyday lenses, sunglass lenses are not all created equal. Many generic sunglasses may look dark but fail to provide a sufficient UV barrier against harmful radiation. Exposure to high levels of UV can lead to long-term eye health issues, including cataracts and surface growths. To ensure your safety, we only stock sunglasses that meet a minimum of Category 2 level of UV and sun glare protection. This standard ensures your eyes are shielded from the harsh Australian sun while maintaining optimal visual clarity.

Advanced Sunglass Materials & Treatments

To improve the longevity and performance of your eyewear, we offer several specialised treatments designed for the outdoor environment.

Internal Reflection Control

While the front of a sunglass lens is dark, the back surface can act like a mirror, reflecting light and "bounce-back" glare into your eyes. We can apply a specialised treatment to the inner surface of your sunglasses to eliminate these reflections, significantly improving visual comfort.

Surface Durability

Because sunglasses are often worn during travel and outdoor activities, they are prone to wear and tear. Our premium prescription lenses include an optional toughened surface layer to provide better resistance against the scuffs and marks that can occur during daily use.

High-Index Sun Lenses

If you have a stronger prescription, you don't have to settle for heavy or bulky eyewear. We can utilise thinned-down materials to ensure your sunglasses remain lightweight and sit comfortably on your face, regardless of the frame style you choose.

Prescription & Non-Prescription Sunglasses

Enjoy the convenience of having your precise prescription integrated into your favourite sunglasses. This allows you to switch between your everyday glasses and your sunglasses with ease, eliminating the need for contact lenses or clip-on attachments. Our team can fit almost any prescription into a stylish pair of sunglasses, combining clinical precision with the comfort and safety of premium UV protection. We also offer our full range of high-quality sunglasses for those who do not require a prescription.

Polarised Lenses
Polarised sunglasses cut out reflected light from surfaces such as water, snow, glass and even road surfaces. This tends to block glare and improve contrast for the wearer, making vision clearer. As the majority of the glare is blocked, polarised sunglasses are more likely to reduce eye strain and fatigue. These sunglasses are perfect for the keen fisherman or snow-lover!

Tinted Lenses
Tinted lenses come in a variety of grades, from a light tint to the darkest legal tint. We can make lenses with a full tint (same darkness throughout the lens), or we can make a graduated tint, which gives more of a fashionable look, with a darker tint at the top and a lighter tint at the bottom of the lens. Tints for your sunglasses also come in a variety of colours, to suit you and your frame perfectly.

Maintaining Your Sunglasses

Because sunglasses are often worn during travel and outdoor activities, they are prone to extra wear and tear. Follow these steps to protect your investment:

  • Rinse After Saltwater: If you have been at the beach, gently rinse your sunglasses with fresh water to remove salt crystals before wiping them with a microfibre cloth.

  • Avoid the "Headband" Habit: While it is tempting to push your sunglasses up onto your head when indoors, this can gradually stretch the temples and cause the frames to become loose.

  • Professional Adjustments: If your sunglasses feel uneven or start to slip down your nose, drop into Acuity Eyecare for a complimentary professional adjustment. Our team uses specialised tools to ensure a perfect, comfortable fit for the life of your eyewear.
